HLC LOVES MCR | 8 Places to Visit in Manchester

August. What a ride! Bee in the City’s Bee Trail is buzzing, the city streets are decked out in their finest rainbow attire for Manchester Pride and HLC is still celebrating the fact that we turned 8 this month!

With the Bank Holiday rolling in this weekend, we thought we would take you on a little tour of our home. We recently visited our 8 favourite spots in the city; so without further ado, here’s what they mean to us and why we think you should visit too:

John Rylands Library

This striking gothic building perches on the edge of Spinningfields – the district HLC calls home. It took ten years to build and was opened to the public in 1900.

We are always left in awe of the incredible architecture throughout the building. Everywhere you look, you’ll be left speechless by the attention to detail, from its ceilings, to The Historic Reading Room; even the toilets are fascinating!

Bridgewater Hall

HLC work closely with the Hallé – who are based at the Bridgewater Hall, providing sweet treats for numerous events and gatherings across their venues. Founded by Sir Charles Hallé in Manchester, the orchestra’s first concert was held in 1858!

Today, we regularly hold competitions to win tickets for some of the fabulous shows held at the Bridgewater Hall, so keep your eyes peeled across our social media channels!

Great John Street & King Street Townhouse Hotel

We think that Great John Street and King Street Townhouse Hotel are some of the best boutique hotels in Manchester.

We often provide cupcakes and layer cakes for weddings held at these two venues. Visit the Wedding page of our website for more information.

Manchester Craft and Design Centre

Manchester Craft and Design Centre began life as a fish and poultry market in 1873. Today, it is a hive of creativity and home to some intriguing designers, makers and studio artists.

You can still spot two of the original fishmongers’ booths on the ground floor, one of which was a relative of HLC’s very own Director, Sarah Wilson-Gibbons!

Fred Aldous

For an artsy overload, get yourself over to Fred Aldous. It has been supplying the people of Manchester with everything they could ever need to pursue their artistic endeavours since 1886!

Like us, it is an independent business and we can only dream of selling cupcakes for the next 120 odd years!

Manchester Town Hall

Manchester Town Hall has been bringing Harry Potter vibes to the city since the 1800s. It has a special place in HLC’s heart because our Director, Sarah Wilson Gibbon’s great, great, great Grandad carved some of the wood inside!

St. Annes Square

We couldn’t miss mentioning St. Annes Square. At the heart of the city, it has so much to see all year round; a highlight being the Manchester Christmas Markets.

It was also the site where hundreds gathered to pay tribute to those killed in the Manchester Arena Attack, and for weeks it was filled with flowers, balloons, teddies and messages; spreading love not only throughout the city, but across the world.

Selfridges intu Trafford Centre

And finally, here we are at one of the most luxurious department stores in the country, Selfridges in the Trafford Centre; our business partners and the home of HLC’s second site.

Our concession and drinks bar is a thriving hub in the food hall and sells cupcakes, cakes, cakepops and brownies, as well as delicious coffee and tea.
